The Pittsburgh Steelers sign safety Will Allen

Blogged under Free Agent Additions, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by admin on Monday 8 March 2010 at 1:06 pm

The Steelers have signed 27-year old safety Will Allen to a 3-year deal.  Allen played in 8 games for the Buccaneers last season and he made 20 tackles and defensed 1 pass.  He has now played in 84 games in his NFL career and he has made 195 tackles, defensed 8 passes, forced 2 fumbles and he has 4 interceptions.  I really don’t like this signing much as Allen wasn’t good enough to play much for the Buccaneers and that says quite a bit about his talent level.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lose Greg Warren for the year

The Steelers have lost long snapper Greg Warren for the rest of the year.  He played in all 14 games (0 starts) for the Steelers this season.  He has now played in 69 games (0 starts) in his five years with the Steelers.  The Steelers have signed Jared Retkofsky to replace Warren as the long snapper and he has played for them before.  He should do a decent job for them the rest of the way.

The Pittsburgh Steelers sign Joey Galloway

The Steelers have signed 38-year old WR Joey Galloway.  Galloway played in 3 games earlier this season for the Patriots and he caught 7 passes for 67 yards (9.6 avg).  He has now played in 188 games in his NFL career and he has caught 689 passes for 10,777 yards (15.6 avg) with 77 TD grabs.  Galloway also has carried the ball 63 times for 496 yards (7.9 avg) with 1 TD run in his career.  The Steelers will likely use Galloway as the #4 WR the rest of the season.  I really like this signing for the Steelers because if Galloway has anything left at all he will help them the last couple of weeks and in the playoffs if they are lucky enough to make them.

The Pittsburgh Steelers sign two players to help the special teams

Blogged under Free Agent Additions, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by admin on Tuesday 24 November 2009 at 6:58 pm

The Steelers have signed 32-year old CB Corey Ivy and 29-year old linebacker Rocky Boiman.  Ivy played in all 16 games for the Ravens last season and he made 52 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, forced 1 fumble, defensed 3 passes and he had 2.5 sacks.  Ivy has now played in 110 games in his NFL career and he has made 278 tackles, defensed 25 passes, has 9.5 sacks, forced 5 fumbles and he has 3 interceptions.  Ivy will also provide some depth in the secondary.  Rocky Boiman played in 11 games last season for the Chiefs and he made 73 tackles, defensed 3 passes and he forced a fumble.  He has now played in 97 games in his NFL career and he has made 254 tackles, defensed 12 passes, has 1.5 sacks, forced 3 fumbles and he has 5 interceptions (1 he has returned for a TD).  Boiman will also give the Steelers depth at linebacker.  To make room on the roster for Ivy and Boiman the Steelers have waived 28-year old CB Keiwan Ratliff and 24-year old linebacker Donovan Woods.  Ratliff played in 8 games for the Steelers this season and he made 9 tackles.  Woods only played in 1 game in which he made 1 tackle.  Woods will be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.  Something had to be done on the kickoff team which is allowing 26.9 yards per return this season and opponents have returned 4 kickoffs for TDs.  These were solid signings for the Steelers and they hope that Ivy and Boiman will help clean up the mess.

UPDATE:  The Steelers have released Corey Ivy after just one game as he didn’t make any tackles.

The Pittsburgh Steelers sign DT/DE Ra’Shon Harris

Blogged under Free Agent Additions, Bloglockers, Front Page, This Weeks Breaking News, General by admin on Thursday 15 October 2009 at 7:32 pm

The Steelers have signed 23-year old defensive end/tackle Ra’Shon Harris.  He is a big guy at 6′4″, 300 pounds but he was also cut by the Carolina Panthers which says quite a bit about his talent level.  Harris played in 2 games for the Panthers this season and he has 2 tackles.  Don’t expect much out of him.
