Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New Orleans Saints

The Saints are flying high at 6-2 and need this game to stay ahead of the Falcons in the division.  The Steelers’ Joey Porter has “guaranteed” a victory over the Saints…..what a fool he is!  What in the Steelers play this season has Porter thinking they will beat the Saints on Sunday?  Nothing!  Willie Parker and Hines Ward sounded like beaten puppies this weak in Steelers press conferences already talking about next season…..with 8 games left this year!

The Saints have been throwing the ball to set up their running game and that’s bad news for the Steelers defense.  The Steelers defense has made Jake Plummer & Michael Vick look good throwing the ball in recent weeks, so their are serious doubts that they will be able to deal with Drew Brees and his receivers.  Look for Brees (2,206 yards passing, 14 TDs) to throw the ball downfield to Marques Colston (44 rec, 700 yards) and Joe Horn (30 rec, 507 yards) and have alot of success with it.  The Saints offensive line has only allowed 8 sacks this whole season and should be able to handle the Steelers blitzing tactics and make them pay.  Deuce McAllister (487 yards rushing) and Reggie Bush (207 yards rushing, 312 yards receiving will test the Steelers linebackers all day long.

The Steelers need to get back to “Steeler Football” which means running the football.  Look for Willie Parker to have a HUGE game against a Saints defense that is allowing 115.4 yards rushing and 4.5 yards per carry.  The linebackers of the Saints will have problems with Parker’s speed if the Steelers run some sweeps.  The Steelers would be smart to limit the passes that Roethlisberger throws to the shorter passes so that he doesn’t make bad decisions with the football as he has been trying to hit too many home runs and making HUGE mistakes with the ball.  They should try to throw the ball to the forgotten man….Heath Miller.  Miller is too good of a player for the Steelers to waste.

If the Steelers stick to the running game and Roethlisberger throws the ball less than 25 times, the Steelers will have a good chance to win this game.  The Saints are the better team here though and I’m leaning that way.

The Steelers made a mistake this season and it ruined their year.  The Steelers rushed Ben Roethlisberger back too early even though Charlie Batch was playing great.  I know, hindsight is always 20/20, but they should have waited until Ben was 100%.  “Big Ben” has been playing scared all season and it all started when the Jaguars hit him in the gut.  Roethlisberger has completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,779 yards with 7 TDs and 14 INTs.  His QB rating has sunk to 72.2, which is awful for him.  Ben is scared to run the ball as he only has 10 carries for 11 yards and he is holding the ball to long as he has been sacked 23 times already this season.  He shouldn’t be on the field until he feels better, and I blame that on Bill Cowher…..he should know better than that.

Charlie Batch has been outstanding when given the opportunity to play.  He has completed 24 of 39 passes (61.5%) for 410 yards with 5 TDs and 0 INTs.  Batch has an unbelievable QB rating of 136.8.  I wonder what would have happened if the Steelers started him a couple of more games early in the season until Roethlisberger was fit.

Steelers play sloppy game and lose 31-20 at home to Broncos

The Steelers wasted 499 total yards of offense by turning the ball over 6 times.  The culprits were Ben Roethlisberger with 3 more pickoffs, Hines Ward (fumble), Cedric Wilson (fumble) and Santonio Holmes (fumble) and that is pathetic!  Ben Roethlisberger continued his sloppy play, completing 38 of 54 passes for 433 yards with 1 TD and 3 INT.  Willie Parker had a good game, carrying the ball 17 times for 70 yards (5.0 ypc) and a TD.  Parker also caught 7 passes for 67 yards and a TD.  Najeh Davenport played a decent game.  Davenport carried the ball 2 times for 17 yards and caught 5 passes for 57 yards.  Hines Ward caught 7 passes for 127 yards, but he lost a fumble in the endzone when the Steelers were trying to comeback.  Cedric Wilson (4 rec, 59 yards) and Santonio Holmes (6 rec, 58 yards) did not play that well.  Heath Miller finally got some passes thrown to him and he caught 5 passes for 34 yards.

James Farrior came to play with 12 tackles, too bad not many of his buddies came along with him.  The Broncos carried the ball 23 times for 115 yards (5.0 ypc).  The Steelers made Jake Plummer look good, which has been hard to do this season.  The Broncos completed 16 of 27 passes for 221 net yards passing.

The Steelers just don’t have it this season, as last year’s Championship is starting to look as if it was a fluke.

The Broncos have won of their last 6 games and are coming off of a tough loss to the Colts last Sunday.  The Steelers have lost 5 of their last six games, sinking to a new low in losing to the Oakland Raiders.  The Steelers are now tied for last place with the Cleveland Browns, and proving that last year’s Super Bowl win was a HUGE fluke!

The Broncos will do what they always do and come out running the football.  The Steelers have been tough against the run allowing 92.3 yards rushing per game and 3.4 yards per carry.  Look for the Bells (Mike & Tatum) to split carries this week.  Tatum Bell (612 yards rushing) is having some foot problems, but Mike Bell ran for 136 yards on 15 carries last week against the Colts and scored 2 TDs.  If the line can block the Steelers blitzing (which has produced 22 sacks), then Jake Plummer can attack the Steelers over-rated cornerbacks.  Look for Rod Smith to catch the short stuff, and Javon Walker to catch the long stuff.

The Steelers need to get back to Steeler football and run the ball.  It could be a little bit harder without starting center Jett Hartings, but the Steelers will try anyway.  Willie Parker (564 yards rushing) will lead the way against a Broncos run defense that allows 90.7 yards rushing per game.  The Colts exposed a weakness in the Bronco secondary, but I’m not too sure Roethlisberger (who has played horrible all year) can take advantage of it.  Roethlisberger will be in trouble if the Steelers can’t run the ball, as he has already thrown 11 pick-offs this season.  You just know that CB Champ Bailey can’t wait until Sunday!

The team that runs the ball better will win this game.  Both QBs are prone to mistakes throwing the ball, and neither off them can win it without a running game.

Steelers starting center to miss time

Jeff Hartings will miss an “extended period of time” with a severe knee injury.  Chukki Okobi will replace Hartings until he can return.  This will definately hurt the Steelers offense as Hartings is a Pro-Bowl caliber center.
