Steelers sign RB Najeh Davenport

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Friday 8 September 2006 at 8:31 pm

The Steelers signed running back Najeh Davenport today and cut Patrick Cobbs.  Davenport has played in 39 games (2 starts) and has rushed for 1,068 yards (4.9 ypc) and 7 TDs.  He also has caught 17 passes for 107 yards (6.3 avg).  Davenport might get a shot as the goal-line back, because he’s a big power runner.

Mea Culpa in Chicago

I was wrong on Charlie Batch. He suprised the hell out of me and managed a good game. It has to be the Pittsburgh Organization because this guy was always lousy before. Charlie I stand corrected. You done good.

Steelers dominate 4th quarter, win game 28-17

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Friday 8 September 2006 at 12:35 am

The Steelers took over the game in the 4th quarter when Charlie Batch hit Heath Miller for an 87 yard TD pass.  Joey Porter then picked off a pass and returned it 42 yards for the game-sealing TD.

Charlie Batch had a good game completing 15 of 25 passes for 209 yards and 3 TDs.  Willie Parker added 29 carries for 115 yards and caught 3 passes for 13 yards.  Heath Miller caught 3 passes for 101 yards and a TD (87 yarder).  Hines Ward caught 5 passes for 53 yards and a TD (7 yarder).  Nate Washington caught 2 passes for 32 yards and a TD (27 yarder).

The defense played very well.  Troy Polamalu had nine tackles and a pick-off.  Clark Haggans had 7 tackles.  Joey Porter had 1 tackle, 2 sacks, and intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for the game sealing TD.

Afraid in Chicago

As long as Batch is at QB, I fear we have no chance at all. I’ve been a Steeler Fan for 60 years. You still can’t win without a quarterback,. Batch ain’t it.

Steelers vs. Dolphins

Click here to see if the Steelers are favored

When the Dolphins travel to Heinz Field on Thursday night, it will be a battle of powerhouse AFC teams.  The Dolphins are on a roll, having won their last 6 regular season games last season, while the Steelers rolled to a Super Bowl Championship.

The keys to this game are really quite simple.  The Dolphin defensive line and linebackers will try to take Willie Parker out of the game and force Charlie Batch to beat them.  The Dolphins have a huge, deep defensive line that should keep their linebackers clean.  If the linebackers do indeed stay clean, Zach Thomas, Channing Crowder and Donnie Spragan will stuff Willie Parker.  With Hines Ward still a little gimpy, Heath Miller will probably be Batch’s #1 target in the passing game, and he might be able to exploit the safeties (Reynaldo Hill and Tavares Tillman) between the hash marks.

When the Dolphins have the football, the Steelers linebackers will try to stuff running back Ronnie Brown and force Culpepper to pass the ball to win.  The Steelers will blitz often and try to rattle Culpepper into some of the same mistakes he frequently made last season when under pressure.  If the line gives Culpepper time, Chris Chambers should be able to get deep against the Steeler defensive backs.  Also, if the Steelers are bringing the blitz often, Randy McMichael could have a huge game against safety Ryan Clark.

If the Steelers keep the score low they have a chance in this game, but I like the Dolphins to win on Thursday because Charlie Batch was a losing QB even when he had Barry Sanders on his team, and Willie Parker is no Barry Sanders!

Bill Cowher

Bill Cowher has had an excellent career in the Steel City.  Cowher’s career record is 141-82-1 (63.2% wins) and he has a 12-9 post-season record.  Cowher has won 8 division titles and 1 Super Bowl Championship.

Charlie Batch owns a career record as a starter of 21-27 (43.8% wins) and a 76.9 career QB rating.

Steelers acquire running back Patrick Cobbs from Patriots

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 4 September 2006 at 2:40 pm

Undrafted rookie Patrick Cobbs put on a show in the pre-season for the Patriots, but they didn’t have a spot on the roster for him so they traded him to the Steelers for an undisclosed draft pick.  Cobbs ran the ball 38 times for the Pats for 188 yards (4.9 ypc) and 3 TDs.  Cobbs also caught 7 passes for 115 yards (16.4 avg) and a TD.

Roethlisberger out for opener, maybe more

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 4 September 2006 at 2:38 pm

Roethlisbeger will not play Thursday night after having an emergency appendectomy the other night.  Roethlisberger will be questionable for week #2 according to Coach Cowher.

This is a major blow to the Steelers, as Charlie Batch is a below-average QB.  Behind Batch is nobody with experience.
