Cedric Humes (7, RB)

Humes was probably picked because of his size and nose for the goal line.  At Virginia Tech, Humes scored 21 touchdowns rushing even though he only started 12 games there.  It will be interesting to see if Duce Staley can hold off Humes and Verron Haynes for the goal line back job vacated by the Bus.

Marvin Philip (6, C)

The thing that Philip did best at California U. was get to the second level of the defense.  Whether he was pulling, trapping or just getting off the ball quickly.  He needs quickness to cover up for his lack of bulk and probably will never be more than a back-up.  Special teams is where he’ll probably earn his paycheck.

Charles Davis (5, TE)

Charles Davis looks like a great tight end.  He has the size 6′5″, 263 pounds and the speed (4.85 40) to be an elite tight-end.  Only one problem….he’s as soft as Charmin.  A weird selection for a team that prides themselves on being physical.  Maybe the rest of the team will rub off on him.  He should do well receiving the ball behind Heath Miller, but he won’t help with his run-blocking…..yet.

Omar Jacobs (5, QB)

Jacobs put up some eye-popping numbers at Bowling Green.  In his 21 starts the last two seasons he completed 64.4% of his passes for 6,592 yards with 67 TD and only 11 INT.  Still, he ran a shotgun offense and throws from a 3/4 angle which will be a problem in the NFL.  Jacobs has time to refine his game because the Steelers probably won’t need him for a while.  It will be interesting to see if he can adjust to playing under the center.

Orien Harris (4, DE/NT)

The Steelers had to be happy to see Harris sitting there for them in the 4th round.  Harris was projected to go as high as the second round.  He fell a little because teams knew that he takes some plays off and doesn’t always go all out.  Coach Cowher will probably fix that problem quickly.  Harris is probably best on the nose.  In his 48 games as a Hurricane (34 starts) Harris made 170 tackles, 32 tackles for loss and had 10 sacks.

Harris could eventually be a starter and was good value in the 4th round.
